چکیده

The incidence of local nerve injury among 192 consecutive carotid endarterectomies in 162 patients between 1977-1983 was determined from review of the medical records. Two facial nerve, 5 hypoglossal nerve, and 2 vagus nerve injuries were discovered for a total incidence of 4.7%. Only the 2 facial nerve injuries failed to improve over 2 years. Followup ranged from 1 to 60 months in this group of patients. Careful attention to details of tissue dissection at surgery should lower the incidence of nerve injury during carotid endarterectomy.

Cranial nerve paralysis following carotid endarterectomy.

During the past seven years 347 patients have been entered into a data bank at the Duke University Medical Center for evaluation of transient neurologic ischemia. One hundred fifty eight of these patients had carotid endarterectomies of whom 24 (15.1%) developed 26 (16.4%) peripheral cranial nerve palsies. Injury to the peripheral portion of the hypoglossal nerve was noted in 13 patients, to th...

Complete transposition of carotid bifurcation: can it be an additional risk factor of injury to the cranial nerves during carotid endarterectomy?

The internal carotid artery (ICA) usually, lies posterolaterally to the external carotid artery (ECA). Sometimes a complete carotid transposition can occur, with the ECA in a lateral position and the ICA on the medial side can occur. Our study evaluated the significance and impact that this anomaly may have on cranial nerve injuries. From January 2008 to November 2010, 296 patients underwent 36...

Literature review of cranial nerve injuries during carotid endarterectomy.

OBJECTIVE In the recent prospective randomised trials on carotid endarterectomy (CEA), the incidence of cranial nerve injuries (CNI) are reported to be higher than in previously published studies. The objective of this study is to review the incidence of post CEA cranial nerve injury and to discover whether it has changed in the last 25 years after many innovations in vascular surgery. METHOD...

Standard Carotid Endarterectomy with Dacron Patch Angioplasty, Risks and Outcomes

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the different risk factors and their impact on the final outcome of standard carotid endarterectomy with dacron patch angioplasty. Methods: From January 1998 to December 2002, 805 (488 males, 317 females) patients underwent standard carotid endarterectomy with dacron patch angioplasty at Texas Heart Institute. The mean age was 69.5 years (range 34-...

Macrostructure of the Cranial Cervical Ganglion in the River Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis)

The autonomic nervous system consists of a vast range of nerves and ganglions. Anatomical studies have demonstrated that the sympathetic innervations of the head and neck are affected by the neurons that ramify from the cranial cervical ganglion (CCG). The CCG is the end of the sympathetic cervical trunk, which runs with the vagal nerve during its cervical course. In this study sixteen adult (2...
